Restoring 2000 Years of Wine Making

Edició Most 2026

About the movie

Vila de Frades, in the Alentejo, is the heart of Portugal’s talha -big jars of clay- wine tradition, brought to the region by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. Five childhood friends and family members keep the tradition alive in the traditional way, fermenting the wine in clay talhas without any chemical intervention. The skins and seeds settle at the bottom of the amphora, naturally filtering and shaping the wine over the course of several months.

The film follows the process from harvest to the opening of the jars on St. Martin’s Day, as well as the friendship that holds it all together.
